Transport Challenges and Solutions for Handling DDGs

When it comes to transporting DDGs, every step of the shipping process is an opportunity to save—or lose—money.

The cost of handling DDGs can be highly volatile, depending on the mode of shipping, the time of year, market conditions, supply and demand, seasonal demand, and the destination. This volatility has a major impact on the cost of transporting DDGs.

The Type of DDGs You Transport Matters

Various types of DDG formulations will transport differently depending on several important factors, including the ambient temperature, the dryer temperature, the dryer exit moisture content, the grain particle size, and more.

Formulations that have a higher fat content are more likely to harden up in railcars than those with less fat.

If you’re familiar with these variations, you can prepare better for unloading and reduce your expenses accordingly.

Railcar Expenses Add Up When Transporting Caked DDGs

Rail shipping in particular is an expensive undertaking, including railcar leasing, labor, safety, cleaning, and repairs caused by damaged railcars from sledge hammers.

On top of that, if your railcar is loaded hot and moisture has accumulated on the interior, the dry particles that make up DDGs can stick together during transport.

Stickiness and caking of DDGs can leave as much as 10% of DDGs leftover in each railcar, costing you thousands of dollars over the length of a one-way trip.

And when caked DDGs arrive at their destination, it can take many hours to clear out the hardened grains. That time adds up, along with the damage your crew inflicts on railcars, trying to shake caked DDGs free.

Save Time and Money with the CARHOE Hard Car Unloader

You can increase productivity and lower your transit costs significantly with the Sarka CARHOE Hard Car Unloader. This specially designed tool takes care of caked DDGs and expedites the unloading process, saving you time, energy, and resources, which could add up to thousands of dollars with every shipment.

How Does CARHOE Compare to Other Hard Car Unloaders?

There are other hard car unloaders in the marketplace, so what’s the difference? At the end of the day, we’re breaking up the DDGs one way or the other and moving along, right?

If that was the case, guys with sledgehammers might as well keep banging on the side of the rail car.

The CARHOE Hard Car Unloader makes your job safer, faster, and more efficient. Let’s take a look at some of the differentiators CARHOE has compared to our competitors, and then watch the CARHOE in action.

Ease of Installation

Other brands require more steel and structural support that stretches over your rail system, but CARHOE’s sleek design enables installation on just one side of your tracks. Our system is one complete, standalone unit. It doesn’t require a secondary mounting structure.

Greater Range of Movement

Because of its mounting design, other company’s unloaders are in a fixed location while ours is able to pivot, and work with two unloading locations side-by-side. This gives you greater control and flexibility, which ultimately means a faster unloading time for your crew.

Quiet Operation and Lower Railcar Impact

CARHOE is proven to eliminate damage to rail cars and lower the amount of unnecessary noise in the yard.

Onsite Training and Installation Assistance

CARHOE offers onsite installation assistance and onsite training, so that you can be up and running with your new equipment in no time at all.

Ongoing Customer Support

We pride ourselves on being there for our customers, long after installation and training is complete. We’re here to get you back up and running if you have a maintenance issue.See the CARHOE in action and then learn more about how the CARHOE Hard Car Unloader can benefit your business.

Make the Global DDG Shipping Process Easier

In the last few years, demand for dried distiller’s grains (DDG) has exploded around the world, with U.S. exports of DDG increasing from 5 million tons in 2009 to more than 11 million metric tons in 53 countries in 2021/2022, according to the U.S. Grains Council.

Mexico is the largest importer of DDG currently, and Vietnam is the next largest, followed by South Korea, Canada, and Indonesia.

More Congestion as DDG Demand Increases

As more countries purchase DDG as a feed ingredient, more feed mills, rail yards, and shipping docks will need to manage the unloading of DDGs safely, quickly, and efficiently so that products arrive on time, on budget, and without contamination. DDG settles and compacts during transit creating issues with the unloading process. To hasten the job, workers may use sledgehammers, shovels, jackhammers, and other tools to break up the contents inside the railcar. This can create unnecessary damage to the car, potentially contaminate the product and create safety hazards for employees.

But demand for DDGs is only going to increase globally.

ENTER: the CARHOE™ Hard Car Unloader.

Sarka’s CARHOE™ Hard Car Unloader address these challenges employees face around the world. Carhoe makes unloading products like DDG, corn meal, corn gluten pellets, coal, coke and aggregates faster, easier, safer and more profitable.

Numerous Benefits of CARHOE Hard Car Unloader

Demand for dried distillers’ grains, or DDGs, is increasing across the country as a high-protein feed option often transported by rail. DDGs can be extremely challenging to unload because the product compacts during transit.

Sarka’s CARHOE Hard Car Unloader is designed specifically to ease the strain of unloading difficult products that compact during transit in rail cars. See the CARHOE in action and read on to learn more about the benefits of having a Carhoe Hard Car Unloader.

CARHOE Makes the Job Safer

Unloading DDGs, corn gluten, and other grains can create safety issues that put employees in danger. With a Carhoe, employees aren’t climbing on railcars with tools and sledgehammers to manually separate product. Carhoe reduces employee risk by minimizing fall hazards, fatigue, injury, and workers compensation claims while also eliminating damage to railcars.

CARHOE Reduces Your Labor Costs

Carhoe decreases unloading time exponentially and reduces the number of employees required to unload difficult cars. Noise is reduced drastically because of the quiet operation and eliminates pounding with jackhammers and sledgehammers.

Benefits of Carhoe Hard Car Unloader:

  • Considerably reduces unloading time.
  • Significant reduction in employee fatigue and injury.
  • Reduces the number of employees required.
  • Eliminates damage to rail cars.
